MISSION
STATEMENT
The
Supreme Council order of the Knights of Pythagoras is a youth organization
dedicated to "The fatherhood of God and the Universal Brotherhood of
Man." Our organization takes young boys between the ages of nine and
eighteen and helps to develop them into young men. We promote family
values, provide educational scholarships and play a significant role in the
uplifting of humanity.
BRIEF
HISTORY
Pythagoras
was a Greek philosopher or student of knowledge who lived about 2,500 years
ago. He worked in the fields of music and geometry. he founded the Pythagorean
brotherhood, a group of his followers whose briefs and ideas were rediscovered
during the Renaissance. He contributed to the development of mathematics
and Western Rational Philosophy.
Among
the basic tenants of the Pythagorean are the beliefs that reality, at it's
deepest level, is mathematical in nature; that philosophy can be used for
spiritual purification; that the soul can rise to union with the divine; and
that certain symbols have a mystical significance.
The
Knights of Pythagoras in San Antonio was named after J. S. Sutton.
It gave tribute to the family who served a major roll in our community in education,
business and government in the past as well as present. In 1948, the
family was the first African American family to be elected to public office in
the south since the reconstruction. J. S. Sutton, the father opened a
skating rink in 1888. He founded Carter-Sutton Funeral Home in the early
1890s with O. J. Carter and a Mattress Factory in 1933, a few contributions the
Sutton Family made in San Antonio, Texas.
